What is a ‘Social’ Figure ?  First things first, we have to define what the word ‘Social’ mean in reference to Argentine Tango ? The easiest way to answer that question is actually in its opposite for a whole bunch of reasons.

In today’s tango world there’s a growing movement towards Performance Dancing for Argentine Tango. Meaning ? Performance Tango is tango that has been modified or developed for the stage or for show. Or it is Tango movements and structures that have been modified from its original social form so that it can be seen from all angles or from very far away – several rows back for an audience. It has the moniker of being very ‘showy’ or large in nature so that it can be seen. Usually it is danced to very dramatic variations of Golden Age classics, invoking the long, stringy, accented notes of the music where Pugliese variations or Piazzolla based music is used. This music is typically selected as a way to demonstrate the vocabulary, and the dramatic relationship of the couple or to express the ‘passion’ of couple. This is Performance Tango in its simplest descriptive form.
